Willem J. Riley bestuurde de manier waarop een kip zich in balans houdt en daarmee begon een nieuw merk: New Balance. Een kip houdt zich namelijk met behulp van drie speerpunten in balans en hierop zijn New Balance schoenen gebaseerd. Met de kennis die Willem J. Riley had opgedaan werden er eerst inlegzolen voor mensen met rug- en voetklachten ontworpen. Inmiddels is het merk het op drie na grootste sportschoenenmerk ter wereld.
